In the high desert of Northern New Mexico, in an underground cave you can hear the strange sounds of one man who is entranced in his work. There is a small entry that opens into a cavern, and that is the place where Ra Paulette has spent the last 25 years carving New Mexico’s sandstone into magnificent art. It is incredible that during all these years, while he was doing this work the only company was his dog.
At the question is he is a man obsessed with cave digging, he gave really thoughtful response: “Is a child obsessed with play?”
The purpose was to explain that if you love what you are doing, you are driven to do it all the time. He explains that his majestic pieces are environmental projects. His goal is to inspire many other people to open up emotionally, in response to the enormity and power of what his carvings evoke.
We can describe his art as really magical creation in the underground caves that he has carved. At the same time, they are intimate and overwhelming.
The interesting part is that Ra doesn’t describes himself as an artist, he says that he is ordinary man who is expressing his sense of wonder in passionate way. What Ra has created can be described as livable art of unbelievable power.
At the video below you can watch the rest of his amazing story, and you can see a tour of his magnificent caves. This amazing masterpiece had no notoriety until one filmmaker asked him to do a documentary. The film is called “Cave Digger” and it ended up winning an academy award!
