A transgender couple from Ecuador made history last year when a transgender father became pregnant by a transgender mother. Twenty two year old Fernando Machado gave birth to the couple’s son in June 2016. His girlfriend, thirty three year old Diane Rodriguez is a transgendered woman, and a prominent LGBT-activist, and the first transgender candidate to run for Congress.
Neither Fernando nor Diane has had gender reassignment surgery, and they were able to conceive the baby naturally, without the need for medical intervention. They are the first transgender couple to become pregnant and have a baby in South America.
Diane told the BBC ‘Being a mother was never something I thought I would do because I am transsexual.’ She adds ‘The law before demanded that to be recognized as a woman you had to be castrated.’
She explains ‘We live as man and woman. I’m a transfeminine woman and Fernando is a transmasculine man. The process to get here was complex for each of us.’ She adds ‘Knowing it’s our right, we decided to add another member to our family.’
Diane who was born male, was candid and she has previously spoken of how she struggled after coming out to her family.Fernando was born and raised in Venezuela, but moved to Ecuador to be with his girlfriend. Diane says ‘some people are for this and some are against it, but that doesn’t make us uncomfortable. We knew this would happen and we were prepared because our goal is to shake the moral foundation in Ecuador and other countries.’
The pair met on social media, and dated for two years before getting pregnant. Diane and Fernando are South America’s most high-profile transgender couple, and are seen as a symbol for growing tolerance in the continent.
