You might not have been aware by now, but your urine can reveal a lot about your overall health. Urine is body waste in liquid form, consisted of water, salt, and chemicals-urea and uric acid. The kidneys make it during the filtration of toxins and other bad elements from the blood.
When everything is normal and healthy in your body, the color of the urine varies from pale yellow to gold. This color originates from a pigment produced by the body known as urochrome. When the urine is much paler, almost colorless, it means that you’ve been drinking a lot of water or that you’ve taken diuretics-drugs for removal of fluid from the body.
On the other hand, if your urine is very darkish yellow, it means that you’re not well hydrated. Often times, this is also a sign of liver issues. The urine can also be pink or red because of foods like carrots, beets, blackberries, etc. However, this may also be a side effect of certain medications. The important thing is to consult your physician right away if you notice that your urine is reddish or pinkish. Often times, this color might be a sign of some more serious issues like UTI, prostate problems, kidney disease, and tumor.
If your urine color is orange, it can be a consequence of meds like vitamin B2, antibiotics, or UTI drugs. Also, this could be a sign of dehydration or liver or bile duct problems. Urine can also be blue or green because of food dyes or certain medications. There are several rare medical conditions that can turn the urine greenish or bluish.
Moreover, you shouldn’t pay attention to your urine color only, but also to its consistency. For example, if your urine is foamy, you might have problems with the kidneys. Also, it’s crucial to pay attention to your urine’s smell. In normal conditions, its odor shouldn’t be very strong. However, there are foods that can contribute to an increased smell of the urine, like asparagus. Also, when you’re not adequately hydrated, the urine has a strong ammonia odor. Strong smell may also be a symptom of diabetes, UTI, bladder infection, etc.
How much should you pee?
Everyone’s body is different, but most people need to empty their bladders 8 times per day. Depending on how much you eat and drink, the number varies, especially when you consume coffee and alcohol. Also, pregnant women and older people need to pee more than others. However, frequent visits to the bathroom can be a symptom of UTI, diabetes, enlarged prostate, vaginitis, etc.
All in all, whenever you notice changes in your urine which don’t go away after a day or two, followed by fever, vomiting, thirst, etc., make sure you consult your physician for further tests.
