Sleepless nights are not hard to get through if you don’t have work the next day or any other obligations and you can therefore, stay longer in bed and rest. However, a lot of people tend to wake up at night and unable to fall back asleep, they go to work tired.

Why do we wake up at night?

This means that the body is sending signals that something is wrong- you might be suffering from a certain health problem. For that purpose, we’ve made a list of the 13 most common reasons why you might be waking up at night:

Coughing- in a lot of cases, stomach acid goes back into the esophagus and irritates the back part of the throat which results in coughing. This usually happens few hours after going to bed and it may be followed by other symptoms like heartburn and a sour or bitter taste in the mouth.

In order to solve this issue, you need to control your weight. Namely, experts believe that belly fat worsens the issue by creating pressure on the abdomen and returning the content from the stomach into the throat. What’s more, avoid heavy meals 6 hours before going to bed and sleep on higher pillow.

You need to urinate– frequent night urination may be a symptom of diabetes since the body is trying to get rid of the surplus of sugar through the urine. Night urination may also be a symptom of fibroids because they pressure the uterus or cystitis, a bladder inflammation. If you don’t drink a lot of liquid prior to bed, but you still urinate a lot at night, make sure to consult your physician.

Shortness of breath- nocturnal asthma is known to cause this symptom and thus, wake you up at night and make you irritable in the morning. Nighttime asthma may be triggered by dust and dust mites, so, it’s highly recommendable to change the linens regularly and clean your bedroom frequently.

Vertigo- some people can wake up in the middle of the night because of vertigo and this may indicate benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, a false sensation of spinning which is triggered by head positions and movements. It usually lasts for a few seconds and then goes away. The reasons may be numerous, for example, a traumatic experience, inflammation, disease of the central nervous system, whereas sometimes, the reason remains unknown.

Back pain- sleeping on high pillows can pressure the spine. According to experts, the best position for sleeping is with one pillow under the head and one under the knees. Also, this may be a consequence of a too hard or a too soft mattress.

You’re too warm and you sweat-night sweats are common for women in menopause, but they can also occur in people who have drunk a lot of alcohol or as a side effect on antidepressants. In rare cases, night sweating may be a sign of serious health problems like tuberculosis, lymphoma, etc. And, last but not least, the cause for excessive night sweating may be a result of sleeping in a very warm room, with socks on and a lot of blankets. Therefore, try to sleep in a colder room, avoid wearing socks, and cover yourself with one to two blankets.

Sleep drunkenness- known as confusional arousal, this disorder happens when someone wakes you up from deep sleep or during the transition from deep to light stage of sleep. And, even though you’re able to wake up and talk, you’re not fully awake and therefore, you feel confused. If you experience confusional arousals at night, you might need to stop smoking, lose weight, or reduce the intake of alcohol.

Headaches– if you’ve been waking up for several consecutive days because of intense headaches, that always occur in the same period of time, you might suffer from cluster headaches characterized by sharp pain, usually behind one eye, and they may last from 30 minutes to 3 hours. Other symptoms are stuffy nose and red eyes.

Leg cramps- waking up because of leg cramps may be a consequence of statins, medications for reduction of cholesterol. Help yourself by relaxing in a warm bath before going to bed. Also, drink a lot of water, especially if you exercise. Magnesium deficiency can be another reason for leg cramps.

Hunger- if you often wake up in the middle of the night feeling hungry, you might have night eating syndrome, an eating disorder characterized by eating less during the day and more during the night. The cause of this disorder may be depression or stress.

Pain in the mouth- it may be caused by pulpitis, an inflammation of dental pulp tissue as a consequence of untreated caries, trauma, or dental treatment. In a horizontal position, the pain may be stronger since the pressure on the neck and head is bigger. Consult your dentist to solve this problem.

You’re stressed or depressed– any kind of emotional struggle and stress may be the reason for waking up at night. Since it’s harder for you to enter the deep sleep stage, you might be easily woken up by external sounds. Also, people who overthink tend to have a harder time entering the deep sleep stage since they’re unable to calm their thoughts and fall asleep.  Try to relax in a warm bath, watch a romantic movie, or read a book. Moreover, you can eat a banana or drink sour cherry juice to ease your sleep and if possible, sleep in a dark and cold room.

You’re thirsty- if you wake up at night feeling thirsty, you might suffer from diabetes. When followed by other symptoms like weight loss, blurry vision, and night time urination, you need to consult your physician. Sometimes, eating too much salty food before bedtime may cause thirst as well.
